Sal is the quietest person in the room after Whitmore — and the quietness means something different in each. Whitmore's silence is authority. Sal's is concentration. He is always looking at something no one else can see yet — the finished layout, the composition that resolves the brief, the visual argument that makes the copy inevitable. He sees the page whole before anyone else has read the brief all the way through.
He runs on the moment a layout resolves. Not the moment the client approves it — that comes later and matters less. The moment in his own process when the tension in the composition releases and everything is in the right place and the page becomes quiet. He has been chasing that feeling his entire career.
