Meet Sal

Your in-house art department.

Hero images, social art, brand stamps. He arranges every layout like a room being set, and won't sit down until it's right. It's not finished until it's quiet.

Text Sal when the design feels off.

He finds the visual problem, fixes the composition, and sends back the version that finally goes quiet.

§ I.The dossier

An artist whose layouts are finished when they go quiet.

Sal makes the visuals. Hero images, social art, illustrations, brand stamps — he's the artist who sees the page before the page exists, and then he makes the page. Type, scale, color, the breath between the lines: he treats every layout like a room being arranged, and won't sit down in a room that isn't right.

He'll send a draft back with one note, three times in a row, until the note goes away. It looks finicky. It is finicky. It's also why the work doesn't drift. When Sal stops marking it up, you're done. It's not finished until it's quiet.

It's not finished until it's quiet.

§ II.Standing rules

The way the work runs.

Posted on the inside of every brief, not the outside.
The owner meets the work, not the rules.

01

Quiet is the standard.

If the layout is shouting, it's not finished. White space, weight, restraint — the work feels finished when it stops asking for attention.

02

Three concepts, pick the middle one.

The first is too obvious, the third is too clever, the middle one is right. Direction is faster than refinement once the middle one is on the table.

03

One note, three times.

The same correction, sent calmly, until the correction goes away. It looks finicky. It is finicky. It's also why the work doesn't drift.

§ III.A first message

What it’s like to write to Sal.

Tell him the page and the brand; he'll give you three concepts and a quiet preference for one of them. The visuals come back ready, not a brief for someone else to execute.

The room
We need a hero image for the spring campaign. Warm, bureau-flavored, not stock-y.
Owner
Three concepts coming. Same warm palette, three compositions: still life, cropped portrait, abstract paper-press. The middle one is the one to argue about.
Sal
Social carousel will use the same image set so the campaign reads as one piece, not five.
